Test Environment and Methodology

To ensure fairness and reproducibility, all tests were conducted in March 2026 on the same physical setup. The test machine featured an Intel Core i9-14900K processor, 64GB DDR5 RAM, and a 10Gbps fiber connection (downlink 10Gbps / uplink 5Gbps), running Windows 11 Pro 24H2.

  • ExpressVPN: Achieved the lowest latency, with 8ms at the nearest node (Los Angeles) and 185ms at the farthest (Mumbai).

Low jitter indicates a stable connection. ExpressVPN led with an average jitter of 2.1ms, staying below 5ms across all nodes. NordVPN averaged 3.5ms, with occasional spikes to 7ms at São Paulo. Surfshark averaged 4.8ms, but Tokyo reached 9ms. ProtonVPN averaged 6.2ms, with Sydney hitting 12ms. Mullvad averaged 5.5ms, performing moderately well.

Download Rate: Large File Transfers and Streaming

Download rate directly impacts streaming and file downloads. Using single-threaded TCP, ExpressVPN achieved an average of 920Mbps, peaking at 980Mbps on near nodes and dropping to 650Mbps on Mumbai. NordVPN averaged 850Mbps (920Mbps near, 580Mbps far). Surfshark averaged 780Mbps (860Mbps near, 500Mbps far). ProtonVPN averaged 620Mbps (720Mbps near, 380Mbps far). Mullvad averaged 700Mbps (800Mbps near, 450Mbps far).

Combining latency, jitter, and download rate, we assigned scores out of 10:

  • ExpressVPN: 9.5 – Dominant in all metrics, ideal for speed-sensitive users.
  • NordVPN: 8.5 – Balanced performance with good value.
  • Surfshark: 7.5 – Decent speed but stability could improve.
  • Mullvad: 7.0 – Privacy-focused users may accept moderate speed.
  • ProtonVPN: 6.0 – Slower speeds, suitable only for those prioritizing privacy over performance.
